Samaria Gorge

Samaria Gorge, nestled in the rugged White Mountains of Crete, is a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The gorge stretches over 16 kilometers, making it one of the longest in Europe, and offers a challenging yet rewarding trek. Starting at an altitude of 1,250 meters at the Omalos plateau, the path takes you through rocky terrain, dense forests, and alongside streams that form natural pools and waterfalls. The diverse landscapes within the gorge are home to rare plant species and wildlife, including the elusive kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat.
The trek through Samaria Gorge is not only a physical journey but also a cultural one, as it passes through several abandoned settlements and ancient churches, telling stories of the area’s past inhabitants. The most iconic part of the gorge is the ‘Iron Gates’, where the walls narrow dramatically to just a few meters apart. Completing the hike brings you to the small coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where you can cool off in the Libyan Sea. A visit to Samaria Gorge offers a profound connection with nature’s power and the historical depth of Crete.
